腰椎椎板切除术是将受累部位的椎板切除，以解除神经根或马尾神经的压迫，缓解由此引起的下肢疼痛、麻木、无力、大小便功能障碍等神经症状。

腰椎椎板切除术通常用于缓解腰椎管狭窄所致的疼痛。腰椎管狭窄往往由于退行性变导致腰椎后方的关节突关节肥大而引起。增生的关节和相关退行性改变对即将离开脊柱的神经根造成压迫。

术者确认神经的压迫彻底解除，将两侧棘旁肌缝在一起，覆盖椎板所在的位置。

当椎板及其它压迫神经根的组织被去除后，神经根就有了恢复的空间。
